POP Records announces the relase
of a new Pollo Del Mar CD, "Live In Japan Town." With 80 minutes of instrumental
eleki "tik-ee-tik-ee" sound, the CD featues Pollo Del Mar playing 21 songs,
some new, many old, some obscure and a few classics. Pollo Del Mar is eager
to bring their Live act to your hometown, but until they do, please enjoy
them in your own home with the beverage of your choice.
Pollo Del Mar is a rockin surf and instrumental
combo from San Francisco, California. They started in 1993 playing music
of their favorite classic bands like The Ventures and The Bel-Aires as
well as modern bands like The Mermen. Guitarists Jono Jones and Ferenc
Dobronyi are the original members. Bass player Jeff Turner joined in 1995
and drummer Jeremy Rexford joined in 2000. The band still uses Fender guitars
and tank reverbs, but also enjoy adding other guitar sounds to the mix.
Early shows had set lists of mostly covers,
but as time went on the band started writing their own material. Their
first recording, "Insecticide" was released on a compilation called "Instro
Nation by Orange Records in Japan. The band then released a 4 song vinyl
EP called "Surf and Turf", which was then followed by their first CD in
1997, "The Ocean Is Not For Cowards" on the POP Records label. In 1999
Pollo Del Mar signed with the MuSick Recordings label and released "The
Devil and the Deep Blue Sea". They have also appeared on 20 tribute and
compilation CDs in honor of such varied artists as Herb Alpert, Ennio Morricone,
Link Wray, Booker T., and Burt Bacharach. Pollo Del Mar has played
many shows from Seattle to San Diego. They are part of the "Third Wave"
resurgence of surf music in America, which includes bands like the Insect
Surfers, The Space Cossacks, The Aqua-Velvets and Slacktone.
Pollo Del Mar's favorite band is still
The Ventures. Not only because of the brilliant playing and sounds of Nokie,
Mel, Bob, and Don, but because the Ventures are not afraid to cover any
style of music they choose. On this CD, you can hear Pollo Del Mar cover
some Ventures classics like "Hawaii 5-O", "The Cruel Sea" and "Slaughter
on Tenth Avenue". You will also hear them play instrumental versions of
songs from vocal bands like Nirvana and Led Zepplin. Many other 60's classics
are included. Original songs form the group's first and second CDs are
included, as well as two songs from a new CD, which is due to come out
in 2003.
Why has an American band put so much effort
into making a CD for Japan? Pollo Del Mar hopes that this CD will introduce
them to the enthusiastic Japanese fans, and one day they can bring their
surf sounds across the Pacific Ocean for a tour of Japan.
