REEF MADNESS is new compilation of surf and instrumental bands being released by Deep Eddy Records of Austin Texas. The 74 minute CD will feature 24 bands, from such diverse locations as Finland, New Zealand...... and yes, six from the San Francisco Bay Area. The REEF MADNESS CD Release Party will feature all but one of the Bay Area contributors, and two bands from So. Cal. As you might expect, each of the San Francisco bands offer a unique take on the surf genre. The Aquamen are masters of intoxica, the perfect party band. Pollo Del Mar drags surf music kicking and screaming into the next millennium. The Torpedoes play in the tradition of Hot Rod, with the intensity of Skate-core. Santa Cruz's Sub Mersians invite you to a place where The Velvet Underground go surfing. Brazil 2001, coming up from Los Angeles, crunchy pop with a significant surf influence. And Kelp lay claim to being Santa Barbara's only surf band TM.
Surf Music is something of a cargo cult in American music. A large body of classic sounds were dumped and abandoned in Southern California in the early '60's, only to be rediscovered over the decades. Surf music has come back to national consciousness in a subliminal way, being featured in the soundtracks of films, commercials, and sports videos. With the release of compilations like REEF MADNESS, bands have brought surf music back to the new forefront, in styles traditional and modern, experimental and passionate, serene and insane.
