Pollo Del Mar's "Rolling Blackout Tour 2001"
Central Valley Art: A dinosaur made of Tractor Parts
Great fun over the April 20-22 weekend on our little 3 day trip to SoCal. Friday night at Mr. T's was fun -- Pouring rain but still, a decent crowd. Opening the show was the world's only transvestite surf guitarist, Erica Valentine. Erica had some chops, and she would probably do OK in SF, though 6'4" drag queens playing in bands are hardly a rarity up here. Pollo came on next and we had a fun set, followed by the inimitable Insect Surfers. Good to see Art, Big Tiki Dude Jeff, Matt Kora, Jamie and Mr. Danny Amis. We left the club at 2 to drive to San Diego in what must have been the worst rain storm of the year.
Saturday night at the Tiki- easy to pack this small club, with the world's only stage wrapped around a pool table. We traded sets with the Insects-- this kept the tunes going steady all night. I think the highlight for all was the 6" Czeck goddess who shimmied and shaked. For some reason she felt her outfit wasn't tight enough so she went to a little "Intimate Apparel" shop across the street and bought a see-through Genie outfit. Matt Kora certainly got an eyefull! Sunday turned into an absolutely fantastic and sunny day, perfect for an outdoor concert on the beach in Huntington. We Pollos stuck out due to our generally mayonaise like palor, amongst a sea of deep tans and thong bikinis. My first viewing of Surf Report who rocked wonderfully. It is always fun to see a band slip in some relatively obscure cover done in a surf style, in this case Ozzy's "Crazy Train". They closed their set with "Suzie is a Headbanger", in tribute Joey Ramone. The Deoras tone was clean and pure. I really enjoyed their casual stage manor, effortlessy pulling off cool song after cool song. Steve Bedrowski's old school flash on the drums is a monument to style. We had a good set, great to look out and see so many healthy people hanging out in the bright sun and digging instrumental music. Tremendous thanks to the International Surfing Museum for putting this show together!
