| The last
time a Chinese “Year of the Rooster” occured it was 1993, the same year four
guys from San Francisco got together a quasi-surf rock band and called it
Pollo Del Mar. “Pollo” means chicken, of course— so chicken, rooster, close
enough, right? They certainly didn’t expect to be around for the next Year
of the Rooster, but 2005 turned out to be a pretty good year for Pollo del
Mar. By coincidence, planetary alignment or grand design, the band found themselves
rolling along faster than they had ever expected. Pollo’s last studio album,
the critically lauded “The Golden State”, was released in 2004 and the band
took to the road to support it. The tour eventually took them through Europe,
Japan and the US, to places they had only dreamed about— and luckily a tape
was rolling. Pollo Del Mar’s “Year of the Rooster” was recorded live at the Club N9 in Eeklo, Belgium, at The Muse in Kyoto, Japan, and “in the pit” at KFJC Radio in Los Altos Hills, California (by famed surf DJ Phil Dirt.) This set features songs the band played nightly, but tries not to overlap the track list of PDM’s 2002 “Live in Japan Town” CD too much. In addition to old and new Pollo originals, there are a number of cover tunes: Slacktone’s “Bells of St. Kahuna”, the Chocolate Watchband’s “Dark Side of the Mushroom”, and the Surf Coaster’s “Tsunami Struck”, which features an appearance by Surf Coaster’s guitarist Shigeo Naka. The “Wild Wild West Medley” cruises through 10 western themes in 8 minutes and “Jack the Ripper” pays tribute to Link Wray. The disc also has three Quicktime videos– the version of “Insecticide” has “Popcorn” dropped in to the middle of it (the band was told it was “a big hit in Belgium!”) and “Wipe Out” features legendary Ventures lead guitarist Nokie Edwards sitting in. Pollo Del Mar presents this “fans only” release as a document of their best year ever, and looks forward to the “Year of the Rooster, Part 2” due out in 2017.
